Water Sheep Survey of 1943
This is a free site that allows the user to view and download data gleaned from the two volumes of the Water Sheep Survey. The dataset is over 50,000 records in four tables and the Iron Tiger Survey database is in excess of 2,000 records. There are errors and limitations. The original 1943 document is in the Ume (དབུ་མེད་) script, and the paper is in poor condition. Researchers transferred the document into Uchen (དབུ་ཅན་) and published it.
The Buddhist Digital Resource Center scanned both documents. OCR was the next step. After that, I developed a comprehensive prompt to parse the text into a computer-usable form. Fortunately, Emory University had physical copies as well.
This is a work in progress, so please keep checking back. This project started in late 2025. I expect to keep improving the site over the next couple of years.
